• experiment with expressing themselves in a variety of forms and styles

• write essays that demonstrate an increasingly clear awareness of the audiences for whom they are written

• write personal essays that convey meaning via implication and subtext

• produce writing that employs a wider and more sophisticated range of techniques and figures of speech

• analyze and reflect on the choices that they make as writers

• complete a fully documented research project
• continue to write analytical essays, to improve their ability to independently formulate a question about a topic of interest, compose a thesis, and organize and write a paper
